"Soul, blues, rock, reggae,
folk, R n' B, acoustic, pop, industrial, experimental, alternative,
dance, world music; Just music man! From the soul, honest songwriting
without compromise; Truthful and conscious lyrics with emotions and a
heart at the core, without caring about sticking to any one style and
discovering new styles along the way, ever flowing like a river…," is
what this talented musician had to say about when it comes to music and
his feelings with it.
Born on March 17, 1983 he has become one of the truest musicians of our
time. "I'd like to say I was born on earth, because I don't like
borders and things that divide the human race." Gibbran was born in
Guyana and raised there until about the age of 13 when he moved to
Canada with his family of six. He was half named after Kahlil Gibran
who was a Lebanese philosopher and poet, among many things. The other
half of the meaning comes from his father's love for the BeeGees (the
Gibb brothers), which is why his name is spelt with two B's. Gibbran
has been around and involved with music his entire life. There was no
other way with him. His father was in a popular band in Guyana and
would play shows night after night. His father taught him how to play
the guitar by age 13 and Gibbran ended up writing his first song at the
age of 14. He has written many songs since and continues to grow as a
songwriter. "I consider myself an inspirational writer, songs just come
to me you know, and I'm thankful that they do. They can call you at any
time day or night, it is up to me answer, to get up and write it down
or I usually hum them on my little recorder." Gibbran would often go to
the community centre in Guyana when he was young and he would sit back,
watching in awe while the steel drummers practiced. They would usually
tell all the local kids to scram but he wouldn't listen and was soon
playing the drums for them at the young age of 10. "Singing was my
first love but the drums were my first instrument and I'm self taught
on both," he explained. "After my father taught me guitar, I now had
the tools I needed to translate and understand other instruments like
piano and bass and I could finally get the music I was feeling and
hearing in my head out of system!"
Gibbran knew he was destined to be with music from the get go, it just
took him a little time to dive into it full blast. When he moved to
Canada, his parents were excited because of the great education offered
here. He tried the whole college experience and realized it wasn't for
him. A hard thing for him was telling his parents he had dropped out of
school to become a fulltime musician. He jumped from job to job, not
knowing what to do but he always had one thing he could rely on, no
matter how stress-filled his day was; Music. "I tried all those
different things," he said. "I would go out and do all this stuff and
always come home to music, maybe it was my plan/thing to fall back on."
In the past five years Gibbran has performed just about everywhere in
the Durham Region and appreciates every last show he plays. He's
looking forward to a lifetime of music and to share it with everyone
and everywhere he goes. "Music for me is more about the emotion and the
feel rather than the technicality of it. There are times when music
takes me to places I can't even describe I just know I want to go there
all the time." Gibbran has worked long and hard for his current success
and will continue to do so for his future. Deserving everything he has
earned, Gibbran will continue to awe people with his music and spread
the love from town to town.
